What is Sunscreen
Sunscreen is a topical product designed to protect the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV radiation is known to cause various adverse effects on the skin, including sunburn, premature aging (such as wrinkles and age spots), and an increased risk of skin cancer.
Broad-spectrum protection: An effective sunscreen should offer broad-spectrum protection, meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF): Sunscreens are labeled with an SPF number, which indicates the level of protection they provide against UVB rays. Higher SPF numbers indicate higher levels of protection. For example, SPF 30 filters out approximately 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 filters out around 98%.
Water resistance: Some sunscreens are labeled as water-resistant, which means they provide protection even when exposed to water or sweat. However, no sunscreen is entirely waterproof, and reapplication is essential after swimming or excessive sweating.
Application and reapplication: To ensure proper protection, apply sunscreen generously to all exposed skin areas at least 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours or more frequently if swimming, sweating, or rubbing the skin.
